DURHAM HELPS NISD STUDENTS WITH THEIR ‘BIG EVENT’
The big yellow buses were out and about this past weekend as drivers for Durham School Services volunteered their time to take Northwest Independent School District (NISD) students to locations throughout Justin so they could participate in the Big Event. Modeled after Texas A&M’s Big Event where students volunteer on a specific day to say thank you to the community, over 750 NISD high school and middle schools students performed tasks on Saturday that included working at an animal shelter, mowing and weeding people’s yards and painting. To get them to their locations Durham donated 25 buses, and 16 drivers and 10 coaches who volunteered their time. “We care about our students, the community and the people in it,” said Richard Lindell, general manager for Durham. “There was no hesitation when I asked our drivers to volunteer their time as this is their hometown too.” This is the fourth year that NISD has held the Big Event, and Durham has been providing transportation every year. “Durham has been with us since year one when we scrambled to move people around. This event could not take place without them, “ said Mike Hays, student counselor at NISD. “I am amazed at the drivers’ humility and desire to serve. They set a great example for the students.”
